First Looks QNAP 16 Bay Head to Head Comparison
QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP and TS-1679U-RP Head to Head Performance Review

Before QNAP introduced the 16-bay product range recently, Thecus enjoyed free rein with no real competitor in the 16-bay arena within this ferociously fought SMB space. The 16-bay TS-EC1679U-RP and the TS-1679u-rp (non EC) are designed along the same principle as the TS-XX1279U models.

QNAP TS-1679U-RP 16 bay comparisonThe major differences between the two systems are the processor, chipset and memory configurations; these differences make the price differential viable. We wanted to test the units to ascertain if the performance of both units justified the pricing variances.

The Specifications

QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP – Integrated with Quad Core Intel Xeon E3-1225 3.1GHz Processor, SATA 6GB/s, and 4GB ECC memory to ensure smooth operation and reduce memory based errors as much as possible to preserve data integrity. Memory upgrade to 16GB is possible by installing 4GB ECC x 3 memory modules* as provided by QNAP.

HARD DISK DRIVES – The test units were integrated with Seagate ST33000650NS 3TB Enterprise class SATA 6GB/s drives, fully populated to ensure maximum load and capacity. 4TB drives are supported but for this test we were unable to source the Enterprise model. Redundancy RAID set at Level 5 with a Global Spare. (RAID 5 + Spare)

*NOTE: Memory upgrades should only be done using original memory provided by QNAP and using third party memory modules may arise in compatibility issues and QNAP may possibly refuse to help and warrant the product. Please obtain further information from the manufacturer directly if needed.

Performance Stats

The Tests are divided into three categories with an overall average of them making up the final overall score. In the area of large and graphic intensive file sizes it is clearly evident the TS-EC1679U-RP excels as a result of its processor and memory advantage. The same can be seen with the backup and restore services which the differential is nearly the same. This is clearly not the case for office based applications and files a clear indication that “power” specification do not necessarily translate to a higher performance for standard office based storage needs.

Overall Conclusion

Having selected to carry out a performance based test only, it is fair to say other factors are required to be taken into consideration before an overall decision is made about whish system to select. As this is a performance only based review, it is clear from the stats that the QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP is very much the one to beat and the street price differential of approximately $800.00 may be worth its weight in gold, depending on your specific storage need and deployment plan.
